This Is Just a Drill
June 2, 2008
Had an episode this past weekend when I seriously thought the kid was on his way.
Since Thursday, I’ve been feeling him further down in the pelvis area — which is very uncomfortable and sometimes painful, by the way — and have been trying to mentally prepare myself for his arrival.
On Saturday, I was lying on the couch with my feet propped up (my usual position nowadays) and had been feeling achey in the pelvis area again. I got up to use the restroom and when I got back to the couch, I felt stabbing pains radiating from my lower back to abdomen. I have read that contractions can feel like bad diarrhea pain and it felt similar, but A LOT worse.
I told the hub about the pain and lay back on the couch. Then it got really bad — constant stabbing, throbbing pain that wouldn’t end. I couldn’t tell if it was contractions because I felt like there really was no beginning or end. But it REALLY hurt. I started crying — 20% from pain and 80% from sheer terror. “I’m not ready!!” I cried. “It hurts!!!” The breathing exercises we learned? Went out the window because all I could concentrate on was how bad it hurt and why wouldn’t it go away!
I decided to lie down on the bed and lay on my right side since the pain was mostly coming from the left. After awhile, the pain subsided and went away.
Everyone says I’ll know when it’s the real thing. I’m really not so sure.

I totally had the same thing happen about two weeks before Brijin arrived and even went into the doctor’s after calling them about it because it seemed like the contractions had no beginning or end. Guess it’s prelabor when it feels like menstrual cramps that never end, although they told me surely they did… well they felt 10 -15 minutes long to me!
It’s a good sign though that the baby is on the way. After my first round, they picked back up (not nearly as badly) a week later… and then a few days before her due date. The day she was due, they came every 10-15 minutes all afternoon and evening. The next morning they were much closer together and kept coming faster – that’s your sign that it’s probably real. I sat it out at home from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and finally called the doc when they seemed to be coming every two minutes (way to close) at 45 sec. She said go to the hospital… of course they stopped when they hooked me up to the monitor or at least slowed down! So I had to walk the floors twice for 45 minutes. The second round, I definitely knew that I was going to have the baby!!!
Don’t worry about knowing… I did too, but believe me, you’ll know. But it’s better to be safe than sorry and call your doc if you’re not sure. I felt kind of like the girl who cried wolf, but don’t!
You’re in my prayers and thoughts!

[...] PM: I start to feel stronger contractions. Bad. Real bad. They are very similar to the false ones I experienced a few weeks go, except they’re not going away. The hub and I try the “hee hee hooo” that we [...]
